Gillian has been an advocate for children for over 40 years. As the first Children’s Commissioner in Australia, Gillian established the NSW Commission for Children and Young People as an internationally recognised children’s advocacy, policy and research centre, one built on being child-centred and child-inclusive. Prior to that, she held a range of roles including senior leadership roles in the NSW public service, university lectureship, consultancy and family therapy.
Gillian has sat on a number of not-for-profit Boards and Advisory Committees in child & family, housing, aged care, disability and refugee services. She currently sits on the Board of the Australian Theatre for Young People.
In recognition of her contribution to child and family services in Australia, Gillian was awarded an Order of Australia, Officer Division in 2009.
Gillian holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, an arts degree and a Masters of Business Administration.
