We have a Model of Practice which guides what we do. It’s still new, and we’re learning and strengthening it as we go. We’ve recently drawn out four parts of how we work together: co-location, collaboration, social incubation, and collective impact. Our focus is on building this model and improving the outcomes achieved by our In-House Partners. Importantly, we want to create new ways to solve old problems, connect communities, and provide services.
We focus on two things. The first is helping our In-House Partners grow stronger, particularly in governance, finance, marketing, communication, and people and culture, and over time, extending that work to other not-for-profits in the Hunter. Our Learning Exchange, made up of workshops, informal chats, and a speaker series, supports this learning and development. The Learning Exchange includes events that are designed and delivered by In-House Partners for each other.
The second is strengthening communities and how we respond to social issues through connection and collaboration. People often have negative experiences when they visit services or attend programs. This can include feeling shut out because of how they are responding to mental health challenges, addiction, or trauma. We aim to create spaces that are supportive and meet the needs and rights of people who are often isolated and excluded. This means doing things differently and we promote social connection as critical to addressing those concerns.
Guests to our building take part in the services and programs on offer here. We also connect with them and other people in our community with lived experience, using co-design to help shape and improve what we do, because they know what they need.
Embrace People & Place hosts, coordinates, facilitates, and supports our In-House Partners and we are always learning from each other.
In-House Partners spend time together too, collaborating with each other, and supporting each other to develop and strengthen.
Our model is still developing and will change over time as we learn new things. We are learning how different organisations can come together in one place and keep their own identity while collaborating with each other as a whole.
We have learned that the diversity of our In-House Partner community is a strength. Everyone has shared principles and values and works with different groups and communities with the same intention or purpose. This means we often avoid the competitiveness or comparison that can result when organisations from the same sector share space.
We’re learning new ways of working with individuals and communities and about their amazing ideas and strengths. We recently revised our model to look at how we can better support collaboration. While there is real power in organisations coming together around social issues, we also know it can be hard for individual organisations to find the time to take part in collaborative work.
Some of the questions we are thinking about include:
We’re consolidating our model of practice. We are looking at what it takes for individual organisations to sustain their own work while playing an active role in collaborations that create impact across our community. We’re also shaping 437 Hunter’s own identity in the city, as a place that speaks up and acts on community issues, and where community members visit, work, and connect.
