Hunter Homeshare brings together compassionate homeowners with people who are looking for a home.
If you are a homeowner who can offer someone the dignity and security of a safe and welcoming place to live.
Or
If you are looking for somewhere to live that is safe, affordable and welcoming.
We would like to hear from you.
Hunter Homeshare is a community-based initiative that connects people in need of safe, secure, and affordable housing with compassionate homeowners who are open to sharing both their home and their lives.
At its heart, homeshare is a simple but powerful arrangement: a homeowner—often an older person—offers accommodation to a homeseeker in exchange for companionship and help with light household tasks. This arrangement supports ageing in place, fosters intergenerational relationships, and creates a sense of belonging, all while addressing the growing issue of housing insecurity across the Hunter region.
The model is grounded in the values of connection, reciprocity, and mutual benefit.
The concept of Homeshare originated in the U.S. during the 1970s and has since evolved into a globally recognised model.
In the Hunter Region, Embrace People & Place (EPP) is partnering with the Hunter Ageing Alliance and the Homeshare Australia and New Zealand Alliance (HANZA) to pilot and deliver this program.
While Homeshare arrangements can benefit a wide range of people, the current focus of the Hunter Homeshare program is on supporting:
These groups face distinct and growing challenges in accessing stable, affordable housing.
Hunter Homeshare is committed to providing safe, secure, and respectful shared living options that support the dignity, independence, and wellbeing of older women.
At the same time, we are seeking expressions of interest from homeowners—particularly those with a spare room or self-contained space such as a granny flat—who would benefit from companionship and light assistance around the home.
By bringing people together through carefully matched arrangements, Hunter Homeshare helps foster mutual support, reduce isolation, and build stronger, more connected communities.

What is Homeshare?
Homeshare is a simple yet powerful idea—bringing together two people for mutual benefit. An older person with a spare room offers a safe home in exchange for companionship and help around the house. In return, the homesharer gets affordable housing and the opportunity to build a meaningful connection. Together, you’re not just sharing space – you’re building connection, safety, and mutual support.
Who is Homeshare for?
Homeshare is designed for:
Other homeowner applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis, including people who have spare rooms and are open to shared living arrangements in exchange for light household assistance and a contribution towards utilities.
Other homeseeker applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis, including students, essential workers, or others interested in shared living arrangements.
How are matches made?
Our Coordinator takes time to understand each person’s needs, lifestyle, and values, facilitating thoughtful matches and providing support throughout the process.
How can referring services get involved?
If you work with older homeowners or women 55+ or essential workers who are seeking housing, you can submit an expression of interest. Our Coordinator will be in touch to explore how we can work together.
I’m interested, what’s next?
Submit an online Expression of Interest or contact our Coordinator. We’ll assess suitability and discuss next steps.
Can I speak to someone before applying?
Absolutely! Contact our Coordinator for a friendly chat. We support you every step of the way.
Why prioritise older women and essential workers as homeseekers?
According to the ABS Census 2021, older women are the fastest-growing segment of Australia’s homeless population. Many experience housing insecurity due to a lifetime of gender-based economic disadvantage—such as lower superannuation, unpaid caregiving responsibilities, and persistent wage inequality. As housing costs continue to rise, a significant number of these women are living alone or in insecure accommodation, increasing their risk of homelessness and social isolation.
Essential workers, including nurses, teachers, aged care staff, and early childhood educators, play a vital role in our communities, yet many struggle to afford to live in the areas where they work. Rising rents and limited housing supply in the Hunter region mean that workers on modest incomes are increasingly being priced out of safe, stable accommodation close to their place of employment. Housing insecurity affects their wellbeing, their ability to remain in the workforce, and ultimately the communities that rely on their services.
Who can be referred as a homeseeker?
This is not a crisis accommodation service; best suited for people who are relatively independent but need secure housing.
Is this program inclusive?
🌈 Yes! Hunter Homeshare welcomes:
